5 Skincare Tips for Seniors

Just because you’re over the age of 70 doesn’t mean your skin has to look the part. In fact, with the right skincare routine, you can look better than ever well into your senior years. That doesn’t mean you need to get plastic surgery or wear clothes that are hardly considered age-appropriate. It’s OK to have some smile lines and gray hairs, as this gives us personality and serves as proof of everything we’ve lived through up until now. 

It’s not necessarily about chasing the fountain of youth or pretending we’re still 21 years old, but rather about feeling good in your own skin. Taking care of your skin can be simple and even a little fabulous. Moisturize to the Max

A light moisturizer simply won’t cut it in your senior years. Your skin needs to be protected from all the pollution, dust, and dryness that the outdoors can bring. As we age, our skin tends to lose moisture faster, so it often feels drier and flakier than it did in our younger years. 

You want to look for creams rather than typical lotions—creams that are thick and nourishing. Aim for extra ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. These ingredients help lock in moisture and keep your skin feeling soft and supple all day long, rather than just a few short minutes after application.

Sunscreen Like It’s Your Religion

Even on cloudy days, you should lather that sunscreen on like your life depends on it. Your skin is incredibly vulnerable to sun damage at any age; however, over a certain age, it becomes even more so. You should always use an SPF of 30 or higher, and if you’re in direct sunlight for a few hours, something closer to SPF 50 will be more appropriate.

Make sunscreen a part of your morning routine, and your skin will stay much smoother and healthier for a longer amount of time. Just remember—sunscreen is only for the daytime. It is not recommended to put on a moisturizer with sunscreen at nighttime, as this can be toxic and clog your pores.

At night, leave the sunscreen alone and keep it on the shelf,  ready to go for the next day.

Use Gentle Exfoliants

Once upon a time, skincare products desperately marketed themselves to us, trying to make us believe that we had to scrub aggressively to get the dead skin off our faces. However, a gentle exfoliant is far more preferable to something abrasive. Use a gentle exfoliant one to two times a week, and opt for a soft washcloth over something rough that could damage your skin’s barrier.
